Delegation.  I know – this is one topic I cover OFTEN on my blog.  Why?  Because I sincerely believe this is one of the areas in which you can “gain” a large chunk of time. (Read more on delegation here.)

Yet clients often resist delegating.

Sometimes the reason is “I just don’t have anyone to delegate to”.  (See this post for resources)

Sometimes the reason is “I don’t know what to delegate.” (Read 45 Tasks An Entrepreneur Can Delegate and  Top Ten Tips for Working with a VA.)

However, once we work through those two obstacles, we may still feel resistance. One question I find that helps many clients break through is, “WHY are you doing this activity?”

[Tweet “Why are YOU doing that activity? Time to delegate?”]

Some reasons I’ve heard:

  • I find doing this activity is a stress reliever.
  • It’s so simple, I don’t really need to think about it, so I can get a “quick win”.
  • I like doing it.  It reminds me of when I was “in the trenches”.
  • I’m good at it – so I get a confidence boost before I start some tougher tasks.
  • I feel important when I do this.

Once my clients know WHY they are doing the activity, they are more apt to make an effective decision on whether to delegate the task or continue doing it.

Is it time to let go?

You have a finite amount of time each day to accomplish your goals.  When you are able to focus only on the tasks that only you can do, you are much further down the path of accomplishment.  Really examine your motivation behind the tasks you complete each day.

It’s your turn! Take a look at your regular tasks – how will you determine what to continue doing? What tasks will benefit you the most? Sometimes getting the viewpoint of an experienced coach can help you decide what to keep and what to delegate.
