“I just don’t have time to exercise! By the time I get everything together in the morning, it’s time to head out the door. I can’t possibly get up any earlier to exercise; I’m exhausted as it is.”

“I just don’t have time to write a book. I know I’ve been putting it off for years, but between running my business and caring for my mother I’m barely hanging on as it is. Trying to write a book is a dream.”

“I want to take an afternoon off to just enjoy the beautiful weather. But when in the world can I possibly find the time?  I have 10 hours of work scheduled in an 8 hour day as is.”

“It’s July!  The summer is half over. I promised the kids we would go camping – if I don’t schedule a weekend soon, school will have started. But when? Next weekend is booked, and the weekend after that, and  . . .”

“I joined this online group to help me grow my business. But, guess what – I’m too busy to follow through with the exercises! I feel like I’m throwing my hard-earned money right out the window, instead of making more!”

“I know I need to join a couple of organizations to expand my network to grow my business. But when? I can barely get out of the office by 8 pm each night as it is.”

“I have this great marketing plan. Every action is connected to one of my goals – and each action supports another. However, I haven’t followed it for 2 months!  When do I find the time to implement? Growing my business is a priority, yet I just can’t find the time in the day to do these little marketing steps. AND they really are little!”

“I know if I cook my own meals I’ll lose weight, feel better, and be healthier. But, seriously, who has time to cook – let alone grocery shop? Looks like drive-thru again tonight.”

“I’m so far behind on my professional reading I might as well change professions. I know I could serve my clients even better if I stayed current, however, when do I find the time?”

“10 minutes! Is that to much to ask for? Just 10 minutes sitting on the deck relaxing with the sun in my face, taking a deep breath, and just enjoying my lunch. Then the phone rings . . . Oh well, maybe tomorrow.”

Can you believe I heard each of these “I don’t have time” stories last week?  Yep – all in one week.

[Tweet “What can you do to improve your life? Start with getting clear on reality.”]

What can you do to improve your life?

First – AWARENESS! Get clear on reality! How are you spending your time? Often it feels like you are slammed with things to do each day, all day long. Yet the reality shows something different. Procrastination. Distractions. Wasted time. What are you doing, and how long does it really take? Check in once per hour and capture your day.

Second – WORK! Once you are clear on how you are ACTUALLY spending your time, decide on the areas you want to improve. Are you going to eliminate some activities? Will you concentrate on limiting distractions throughout the day allowing you to be more efficient and finish earlier? Can you hold a family meeting to plan activities in advance? Can you bring in some additional support? If nothing changes, nothing changes! What will you do differently now that you have this new awareness?!

Third – EVALUATION! A week after doing SOMETHING different, determine if you “have more time to do the things you want.” If so, congratulations, you are making progress – continue on this path. If not . . . face it . . . it’s time to bring in a professional! Life is to short to spend most of your time lamenting that you don’t have enough time to do all the things you really want to do!
