I’m a big believer that time management is really choice management . . . and not always the BIG, HUGE, IN YOUR FACE, choices . . . but the daily little choices that become habits.

Habits – according to the Bing Dictionary, “regularly repeated behavior pattern: an action or pattern of behavior that is repeated so often that it becomes typical of somebody, although he or she may be unaware of it”

Habits – just when you think you’ve created one . . . “life happens” and back you slide.

  • You set (and stuck to) work hours all month.  Then, a client calls for a last minute project, “it’ll only take a minute” you tell yourself, and the next thing you know you are working late every night.
  • You schedule time to rejuvenate your batteries each week.  Then, your daughter gets sick – and all your self-care activities go out the window.

We’ve all experienced our own version of sliding away from the habits that have worked for us in the past.

Does this sound like your situation?

“It seems each day I wake up I have a new idea and new goals. How can I determine which goal to focus on and then stay focused long enough to see progress?”  (The habit of prioritizing has been left by the wayside!)

Here’s what Melisa told me: “I am loving the AWE Challenge; it has kept me focused on my business during a distracting time. I am excited to work with you on moving forward with my BIG goal! “

Or this?

“I have this really great idea for my business – but just can’t seem to execute it! I created action steps . . . but my day-to-day life got in the way and I was unable to implement many of the steps.”  (The habit of creating action steps is alive and well . . . but the habit of eliminating the day-to-day distractions has disappeared)

Vicki reported, “I love this challenge. It has helped me not only work on my goal but also other areas of my life even during this busy time of year. Thank you! “

All these feelings and distractions are normal! Creating strong habits – and then continuing to follow through using these habits can be tough.  (Remember – you’ve probably been doing it the “old way” longer than the “new way”)

Where can you go from here?

I encourage you to use A.W.E. when solidifying habits.

  • A. AWARENESS – Create a clear goal.  What specific habit are you trying to create?
  • W. WORK – Schedule time to work with focused attention on this habit.
  • E. EVALUATE – Set aside a small block of time each week to check in.  What success (and challenges) are you having?

Following these three stages of A.W.E. will help you create strong habits in all areas of your life.
