We’ve all been there.

We set aside 2 hours to work on a BIG, IMPORTANT, AWESOME project, only to realize that there are only 15 minutes left of that 2 hour block.  So, we say, “I’ll work on that tomorrow, I don’t really have time to get into it today.”

Then tomorrow comes – and “life happens” – and again, you don’t have time to work on this project.

Then the next day is a repeat of the day before – and the next day – and the next day – and the next day . . . and WOW! Suddenly 2 weeks have gone by, and you haven’t been able to work on this BIG, IMPORTANT, AWESOME project at all.

You justify this by saying, “I’ll be able to devote the time this project deserves as soon as my life gets back to normal. I’ve been busy; it’s not like I’ve been sitting around watching Dancing With the Stars and eating bon-bons.” (Confession time – I LOVE DWTS and chocolate and often use both as an opportunity to unwind – so no judgment here!)

BAD NEWS – life doesn’t get “back to normal.”  Your “normal” continually shifts.  Each day you allow the day to “get away from you” you miss an opportunity to work on the BIG, IMPORTANT, AWESOME project – thus you never accomplish tasks directly related to your purpose, vision, and goals.

What can you do?

Continue to take action!  Even if you can’t devote 2 hours to your project, you can devote 10 minutes.   Taking one small step puts you closer to completion.

[Tweet “It’s not “all or nothing” – spend 10 minutes on one BIG PROJECT today!”]

Imagine a different scenario . . .

You set aside 2 hours to work on a BIG, IMPORTANT, AWESOME project, only to realize that there is only 15 minutes left of that 2-hour block.  You take that 15 minutes and knock off one small action step.

Then tomorrow comes – and “life happens” – and again, you don’t have time to fully work on this project … but you carve out 10 minutes to knock off another small action step.

Then the next day is a repeat of the day before – and the next day – and the next day – and the next day . . . and WOW! Suddenly 2 weeks have gone by, and you haven’t been able to work on this BIG, IMPORTANT, AWESOME project in a big block of time, but you have been able to knock off 14 tiny action steps – putting you 14 steps closer to completion.

WOW – I like scenario 2 a lot better – don’t you??

Eliminate the all or nothing thinking; instead, when life throws you a curve ball – hit it!  Complete one small step at a time – until you can “redefine your normal” and work in big chunks on your BIG, IMPORTANT, AWESOME project.  Keep moving forward.

Sometimes chunking a big project down into small steps can be tough.  To get you started, I’ve created the SystemSavvy Consulting Project Worksheet to help you identify how you can take that “only 15 minutes” chunk to complete your project in stages. This worksheet helps you identify all those “moving parts” so you know exactly what needs to be done, when, and by whom.

Now it’s your turn!  What tricks have you learned to avoid procrastination and “chunk down” your projects? I want to hear from you – comment below. And your suggestions might help others!
