“I just can’t!”
Admit it – sometimes we can just get so overwhelmed that making one more decision or doing one more thing is impossible to imagine.
I’ve hit this point recently, and last week two of my clients did also.
Is this procrastination – or do you just need a break?
Here’s the Wikipedia definition of procrastination. “Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished by a certain deadline. It could be further stated as a habitual or intentional delay of starting or finishing a task despite knowing it might have negative consequences.”
The part I want to focus on here is “negative consequences.”
Sometimes “pushing through and toughening up and just doing it anyway” has greater negative consequences than delaying starting (or finishing) a task.
Your brain becomes more muddled, your irritability increases, and your ability to think beyond day-to-day survival becomes limited. (In fact, I almost titled this eblast “Last Friday I was so mean!”)
Not the best place to be when you own a business!
Sometimes you just need a break before you can do anything productive!
So, take a break. Turn off the computer. Walk away from your office. Weed your flower beds. Clean your house. Watch Hallmark and Law and Order. Take a walk. Take a nap. Take a bath. Take pictures of flowers. Sit in the sun and just “be.”
And . . . decide to decide.
Pick a date to decide if you are ready to start tackling your projects again.
It doesn’t mean you start back to work on this date – it just means you get to decide on this date if you are ready or if you need a little more time.
Maybe you decide to decide in a couple of hours. Or a couple of days. Or even a couple of weeks.
Often, taking a step back is the best way to take a couple of steps forward.
Because when you say, “I just can’t” . . . admit it, you are fried! It’s not procrastination!
So, take the time you need – just pick a date to decide if you are ready to hit the ground running again or not.
You’ll be more productive when you return! (I was!)
