I’m a HUGE fan of the late Stephen Covey. His book, “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” was the first book on time management I read. Sometimes, even a time strategy visionary like myself can find herself feeling a little frazzled at the end of a day. When this happens, I return to the basics – Covey’s 7 Habits to determine the adjustments I need to make in my schedule.
This video examines the importance of scheduling our priorities first, then the “little things”.
Did you notice how many “little things” were in the bucket originally? Look at your current to-do list, how many of your tasks could be considered “little pebbles”? What priority do you attach to those items? What time of the day do you work on those items?
Notice, Stephen Covey didn’t say “toss out some of those little pebbles, they aren’t important”, but he encouraged the volunteer to keep trying to fit it all in.
With strategic planning you can accomplish your BIG rocks and your little pebbles!
How can you take this video – and turn it into action?
- Create a list of priorities (vacation, self-care, big projects, family, community . . .)
- Schedule time for each of these priorities. (You decide the frequency – some may be once a day, others once a month, others once a year . . . )
- Examine your to-do list for remaining tasks. Cross off any task that really isn’t a little pebble, but more a piece of sand. (SO low priority – it’s a wonder how it ever made it’s way onto the list in the first place!)
- Chose 2 – 5 of these small priorities to work on each day. These are scheduled between the BIG rocks, not instead of the BIG rocks.
What BIG rocks have you struggled to fit into your schedule lately? What system have you found successful when scheduling? What roadblocks have you encountered on the way? (We aren’t allowed to just go and get a bigger bucket!!) I’d love to know – please post below! :)
I just sold one of my extra books of his on ebay! I have to always work at keeping my priorities in order as well.

Covey was a true time management icon. I find a post-it note listing my priorities helps me to keep them foremost in my mind!
Thanks for stopping by!

It amazes me how easy it is to let those “little pebbles” fall by the wayside… eventually the lack of attention to them will turn into big problems. So much easier to just make sure to fit them in as we go about our lives.
Thanks for the reminder!
Exactly! Right now I’m looking at a couple of receipts that need to be entered (little pebble) but the more time that passes, the larger the stack will get, the closer it will get to tax time, the bigger the pebble will become, until it’s a full blown rock!

Most days my to-do list includes far more tasks than I can realistically accomplish, so in the morning (or at the end of the previous day, if I’m really on the ball), I identify the 5-6 top priorities. I then try to ignore everything else on the list until those tasks have been completed, except if I only have a short amount of time available before lunch or a scheduled phone call (for example), then I’ll look for something I can get done really quickly and mark it as complete.
Hi Janet –
I find I can’t fall asleep if I haven’t identified my top priorities before I go to bed! Thanks so much for commenting!
Lisa
I suspect there are some folks who would find it harder to sleep knowing what they would be facing the next day!
giggle, giggle . . . .
I really will have to get the prioritizing done better. I am good at finishing tasks, but find that some take a little too long! Will reorganize!
Michelle –
Thanks for stopping by, and best of luck! Please let me know how the reorganizing goes!

What’s stopping me from prioritizing at the moment? Me. Dealing with the huge emotional blow and then the practicalities of what that entails. At the moment, have been more in “coping” with the fires that are in front of me than prioritizing AND that is changing and I so appreciate the fact that you’re sharing all this good stuff so I have a place to learn!

Positive vibes flying your way! When in a time of crisis, sometime all we can do is hang on and cope. One thing I’ve found helpful is to identify ONE priority I’d like to accomplish in the week. This way, if I can see a little opening in the fire putting out part of my day, I know what proactive task I want to spend some time on. If I don’t identify it, I find my brain may be to fuzzy, frazzled, overwhelmed to identify a priority.
I’m hoping you are finding some time for self care activities! You are most effective when you are authentically YOU – so fill up your cup, pal!
Lisa
You’re such a darlin Lisa…it so helps to have someone else lead the way when things are whackeydoodled, frazzled and feeling like their spinning out of control. Today is “D-Day” for me and I had envisioned being all calm, cool and collected…you know, the “don’t let ’em see you sweat” thang? THAT didn’t happen…guffaw. I have done the one thing you’re saying: created a single focus (my resumes and job hunting activities) so that when I can put 2 thoughts together that don’t sound like a “would you like cheese with that whine” moment, I work on them!
Love ya oodles…and am thinking a massage would be great. Haven’t had one in years so!

Best of luck! Enjoy your massage! Keep your resume/job hunting top of mind! You will find the time, energy, and space to make inroads!

I also love Stephen Covey’s books… I have to make a priority/to-do list every night or else I will never be able to fall asleep. I find that if I spend a few minutes on the little pebbles, I am able to really focus when I move on to the big rocks. Otherwise, I will have all those little things on my mind while I am trying to tackle the big things. It is definitely a daily struggle to stay productive but these tips are great and will go a long way towards getting things done! Thanks for sharing.
Hi Carin –
Thanks for stopping by! I love that you are using the little pebbles to gain momentum before tackling the bigger tasks! Bravo for finding a system that works for you – and realizing excellence in this area takes constant awareness, focus, and determination!
Lisa
Hey there Lisa…thanks! Didn’t get the massage done this weekend, although did get a live interview set up for a project in Indy so did the quick thinking any woman would do…and checked my roots and got my hair/cut color rescheduled for Friday (smile). Plus edited a lot of material goods and got a nice pile going for the next call I get for donations! Oh, an ate chocolate too! Whattttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ahhhh . . . chocolate . . . the great stress reliever! I’d happily cross that task off my to-do list every day! :) Best of luck on Monday.
Yup, chocolate is nummeeeeeeeeeeee. Got a couple more resumes out the door this morning and some more stuff packed up. So great Monday so far! You have a great one too…
may your day be igKnighted with passionately powerful possibilities!
